An ADHD evaluation looks at more than a checklist of symptoms. I take time to understand current concerns, childhood and developmental history, functioning at school, work, and home, medical history, sleep, anxiety, mood symptoms, medications, and other factors that can sometimes look like or occur alongside ADHD. When ADHD is diagnosed, we discuss treatment options together, including behavioral and lifestyle strategies and stimulant or non-stimulant medication when clinically appropriate.
ADHD Evaluation and Diagnosis
An ADHD diagnosis is based on the overall pattern of symptoms and how they affect daily functioning—not on a single questionnaire or test.
During an ADHD evaluation, I look at attention, organization, impulsivity, task initiation, time management, emotional regulation, academic or work functioning, relationships, and how symptoms have developed over time. Childhood and developmental history are important because ADHD begins earlier in life, even when it is not recognized until adulthood.
I also consider other factors that can cause or worsen problems with attention and concentration, including anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, trauma, sleep problems, hormonal changes, medications, substance use, and certain medical conditions.
When appropriate, validated ADHD screening tools, previous records, school information, or input from parents and other sources may also help clarify the diagnosis.
ADHD Medication Management
Medication can be an important part of ADHD treatment for some individuals. When medication is appropriate, we discuss the potential benefits, risks, side effects, alternatives, and how different options fit your symptoms, health history, and treatment goals.
ADHD medication treatment may include stimulant or non-stimulant options. Medication selection is individualized, and ongoing follow-up focuses on effectiveness, side effects, sleep, appetite, mood, blood pressure or other appropriate monitoring, and how treatment is affecting day-to-day functioning.
Medication is not automatically recommended simply because someone is evaluated for ADHD. The goal is to first clarify the diagnosis and then develop a treatment plan that makes sense for the individual.

ADHD in Children and Adolescents
ADHD can look different in children and adolescents than it does in adults. Symptoms may affect attention, school performance, organization, impulsivity, emotional regulation, confidence, relationships, and the ability to complete assignments or daily routines.
Evaluation considers developmental history, functioning across settings, school concerns, family observations, sleep, anxiety, mood, learning concerns, and other factors that may contribute to attention difficulties. When appropriate, treatment planning may include family education, school supports, therapy collaboration, behavioral strategies, and medication management.
What Happens During an ADHD Evaluation?
An ADHD evaluation is more than completing a questionnaire. We talk about the symptoms you are experiencing now, when they began, how they affect daily life, school or work, relationships, organization, and your ability to follow through. I also review relevant medical and family history, sleep, previous treatment, medications, and other factors that may be contributing to your symptoms.
Part of the evaluation is determining whether ADHD best explains the pattern or whether symptoms may be related to anxiety, depression, sleep problems, stress, medical conditions, or a combination of factors. Screening tools and additional information may be used when appropriate. After the evaluation, we review the diagnostic impression together so you understand not only whether ADHD is present, but why the diagnosis does or does not fit.
ADHD Medication Management
If ADHD is diagnosed and medication is appropriate, we can discuss treatment options during the evaluation. I review the potential benefits, side effects, and differences between medication options so you understand why a particular approach may or may not be a good fit for you.
I also provide ongoing medication management for patients who have already been diagnosed with ADHD and are looking for continued psychiatric care. Follow-up visits focus on how well the medication is working in everyday life, side effects, sleep, appetite, mood, anxiety, and whether adjustments are needed. The goal is not simply to prescribe a medication, but to find a treatment plan that improves functioning while remaining safe and appropriate for the individual.
